Tops 2 Bottoms

First Closet Raid: Mine.

by Sasha Manuel on February 23rd, 2006

my closetYes, Sasha’s closet. Ha!

I just thought I’d start my Random Closet Raid Series with a feature on my own closet or wardrobe — whatever. Bleh.

I’m not particularly keen on what I have in it right now because the clothes in the photo are the only ones I could fit in one luggage since I am currently in Australia. But I think I did well, don’t you agree? I was able to pack almost a gazillion tops, most of my favorite pairs of jeans and several pair of shoes and flip-flops! Unlike my first visit, I was only able to bring a few tops, several jackets, a couple of shoes, two pairs of flip-flops [one got broken, by the way] and a pair of sneakers. So, on my second try, I did my best to pack what I really want to wear. Yes. It’s my second time to visit this gorgeous land down under. And I’m letting you in on some of my own fashion secrets.

What’s in my closet, you ask? How do I begin? Well, to start off, I love collecting tops. They vary from baby tees to dress shirts. It depends on my mood, really. My favorite are tube tops and the best buy so far are the blue and green tube tops I bought at Supre last year. I reckon I’m currently attached to these colors as you can see with my choice of color in shoes! Teehee. As for bottoms, I have no particular favorite but it would be jeans, capris and denim skirts, which compose the list of my must have’s. And I also like knee-length wide hemmed skirts, tube dresses, jackets and some accessories like scarves and cropped sweaters. Did I mention I’ve fallen in love with bikinis? I currently own three Roxy Bikinis. Hahaha. What can I say? The beach-monger in me is hooked! So, yea. It’s found in my closet, too.

I normally wear a good pair of bootleg jeans or a denim skirt, stilletos, a tube top, a pair of earrings and a purse. I could never feel uncomfortable if I’m wearing this outfit. I love my stilletos. Sometimes I think my outfits revolve around my stilletos. Hahaha. The older the jeans, the better. I like them worn-out and frayed at the seams. Then there’s my earrings. If there’s an accessory that I can’t do without, my earrings would be it. And finally, my signature purse. I’ve been using purses waaay back 2002 and never grew tired of it. Most of my friends are reminded of me whenever they see a purse– and stilletos. Hahaha. Also, sunglasses are a big thing in the accessory department. I always wear it– if there’s sun out, of course!

If you’re going to ask me how I shop, I’d tell you I can’t describe it. My friends have asked me that question time and time again but I would only tell them, if you want to come along one time when I go out shopping, you’re welcome to but please don’t ask me that question again. I’ll tell you where I shop or show you what I’ve bought but to ask me how I do it? Dear me. That’s a difficult question to answer. I’d probably end up telling you, “I look. I like. I buy.” It’s my own meager attempt on answering that question.

I’m not into brands or expensive clothing not just because I can’t afford to spend hundreds on clothes [even if I want to!] but it’s really the challenge of finding that great piece that you won’t normally see on anybody else. I’m selfish that way. I admit to be a flea market and vintage shop afficionado but I suck at finding great bargain prices. I always end up picking the most expensive one from the lot. And I splurge on shoes. Heh. I know, I’m still learning to be a more thrifty shopper. Teehee.

I’m also the type that detests copycats. I mean, there are a lot of looks out there that you can try but to imitate someone’s style is freaky and not flattering. I remember an incident that I went and did a double take on this person thinking I just saw myself. Ack. She was wearing an exact replica of what I was wearing a few weeks back! This girl knew who I was through mutual friends and she sees me every week. But to really believe she can pull something like that probably thinking that nobody would notice? Sheesh. It really freaked me out.

Anyway, I find inspiration in colors, music, shoes and that bit about me that I can’t put my finger on. I guess I’m just one of those people who were fortunate enough to have found a way to express their individuality and creativity in clothes. It’s not that important, actually but it’s been proven useful anyway!

I love fashion and everything in between. I’m thankful to have had different opportunities presented to me to work in this field. As a freelance fashion stylist, as a make-up artist and as a model helped me express this love more. Then of course, there’s this blog now, which helps me express it much, much more. Teehee.

Send me an email if you want me to raid your closet or a friend’s. Hope to hear from you!
