Outfit Repetition

by Sasha Manuel on June 4th, 2006

I’m aware that most, if not all, are concerned with outfit repetition — or being seen in public wearing the same outfit several times. I know since I go through the same feeling of attachment to a certain outfit that I was able to come up with.

There are a few reasons I’d like to share on why this occurs.

  • One, it’s simply because I loved how I looked when I wore it.
  • My wardrobe is limited to what available cash I have for replenishing stock.
  • I have favourites.
  • And when I consider that it’s a different set of public who’ll be seeing me in that outfit gives me an excuse to wear it again. Hehehe.
  • Or the outfit’s so perfect for that thing I’m going to.

So, yea.. I’m guilty of wearing the same outfit on several occasions. But that outfit is something special for me to do it. It hasn’t morphed into a habit just yet, which is a good thing. But there’s a downside to it, too [see reason # 2].

I’m not a celebrity wherein people will start scrutinising all my outfits but if you’re one of those people who stand out and is known for being a fashionista, there is pressure. I do need to project a certain appearance since I also work as a model and stylist.

So, I thought it might be a good idea to let you in on a few trade secrets in styling. ;)

  • Layering is a really good option. It creates a different look in each combination of tops you use. You can even use an item several times in different combinations.
  • Plan your outfits to last at least a month. I always apply the monthly interval rule [well — almost] when it comes to repeating an outfit.
  • Stock on Solids. Stay away from Prints. The latter is easily remember and the former isn’t. Plus solids are easier to use in layering.
  • Utilise your accessory. If you’re showcasing your boots on a particular look, tone the rest down. That way, they’ll remember the boots. So, if you decide to use the outfit and change the footwear, it can create an illusion that you’re wearing something different.

There’s always a way on how to work on a problem. I reckon, all you need to do is be open and creative in seeking out the solution.

What I’ve shared isn’t much but I’m hoping that it helped a little. If you want more tips, feel free to leave a comment or send me an email at sasha [at] b5media [dot] com with your question and I’ll do my best to help you out.

Till next time. Cheers!

2 opinions for Outfit Repetition

When that happens to me its usually because I just can’t keep track of what I’ve worn where. I always do laundry in between of course, but what I get afraid of is that people may think I’m wearing the same dirty clothes everywhere!

    Hi, Trisha.

I know what you mean. But do try my suggestions perhaps it’ll help a little. :)

One way to help you remember what you’ve worn is to know what colour it was. If you’ve established a colour scheme, it’ll help you gauge intervals. :)
