What to Wear: Weddings

by Sasha Manuel on July 18th, 2006

An important question came up while I was witnessing the exchange of vows of my cousin and his bride, “Why do some guests wear the exact colour of the wedding’s motif even when they’re not part of the entourage?” Uh — I was a bit embarrassed to hear the question because I found it a tad bit rude to ridicule guests’ choice in fashion. So, to silence her, I only told her to let them be since it is their choice after all.

Now that it’s all over, the question stayed on my mind since when it comes to fashion and attending formal functions, there are ways to prevent disasters or something like this, i.e. someone scrutinizing your choice of outfit, to occur.

What is my real answer to the question anyway? Well — to be blunt, I abhor the idea of wearing something that will make other people mistake you to be part of the entourage. So, yea — wearing a gown that matches the wedding’s motif is a big no-no in my book.

Another thing that I noticed earlier was how some people seem to refuse to embrace formal wear. It’s like somebody forced them to wear chiffon or organza just to pass as keeping with the attire requisites.

Picture this:

You’re looking at this woman, she has her back toward you. She’s wearing this long ecru organza gown, complete with starched shawl. Really formal. You noticed that she’s a true filipina — black hair and brown skin. Then she turns. You, literally, were shocked with what you saw. She was an utter mess and old. Ack. Her hair was all over the place, curly and all. She was wearing this black-rimmed glasses and with no make-up. Well, okay — she may have had lipstick on. Heh. It was scary.

My point in all these is there will be people who won’t be looking for flaws in your style but if you act as if you don’t care about how you look then getting a reaction that’s similar to my illustration won’t come as a surprise at all.

Here’s a quick check list that’ll be helpful if you’re planning to attend a wedding or any formal event:

  • Choose the appropriate dress, gown, or a tailored pantsuit that you can pair with a really classy pair of shoes, preferably with heels. Always bear in mind the venue of the event.
  • Make time to do your hair and make-up.
  • Schedule to get your nails and toes done, too.
  • Choose your accessories and jewelry well. Don’t overdo it.

It’s not really complicated, you know. Keep things simple and you can’t go wrong. :)
