Why Fashion is Important
Many of you are convinced of fashion’s importance (otherwise you wouldn’t be reading this blog perhaps), but not everyone gets it. Some people actually have the nerve to consider fashion as a frivolous thing, meant for people who have nothing better to do. What they don’t understand however, is that fashion has and always be an important part of our lives.
We can all agree that fashion is all about looking good. But exactly how? To a certain degree, fashion is all about highlighting your assets and minimizing your flaws. It can make fat people look voluptuous. Lanky people full-bodied. And short people tall and slender. Take for example Kate Hudson, who unfortunately unlike her mother, has a flat chest. But thanks to her great choices of tops, and the way she wears them, this isn’t obvious.
Why is this important? Well, no matter how enlightened we become (if we ever reach that level), superficiality will always play a big part. It’s unfair, but we all judge a book by its cover. There’s nothing frivolous about tipping the scales in your favor, is there? Of course, we can’t discount the impact of confidence and carrying yourself properly. But fashion is also an important part of making a good impression on other people. Which makes it worth spending the time and money that we love to for that perfect top or bottom.

I totally agree — personally, knowing I dress and look my best helps boost my confidence.
I guess the criticism comes from the notion that fashion is about being materialistic and emphasizing how material goods can define oneself. Worse is the criticism that we create our identities through an array of mass-produced goods..as if material things can substitute for the persons we really are inside.
I guess to some extent it is true (ie judging celebrities by what they wore during the last red carpet event and how expensive their dresses were) but I believe fashion can also be seen as a means of self-expression, and like I said a means of gaining confidence in oneself as well (I mean, who wants to be seen as a slob right?). If we enjoy it, it’s no problem as long as we don’t let it completely take over our lives to (to the point of believing the OUTSIDE counts more than the INSIDE), believe what we wear defines who we are, and judge people based solely on what they wear. And of course besides enjoying fashion we should also care about other things in the world. Fashion, as seen on the OUTSIDE can complement what’s on the INSIDE. I hope that makes sense.

que sera sera.
fashion is a part of everyone lives. when these people decide what to wear when going for a job interview, i wonder what they would call it when they’re at a mall looking for the right oufit?
fashion is not just about looking good or superficiality or vanity, whatever. people are in denial of all these things. we all have it. granted some take it to the next level.
anyhooo, you know what I mean my fellow fashionista :)

Glennie: confidence is an integral part of fashion, I agree. You need it to pull off an outfit and yea, fashion can help feed the confidence.
Dexie: I know what you mean. ;)
I simply reckon that fashion is considered trivial and insignificant by most people who think of themselves as non-conformists or the free thinkers. It’s not even worth a serious discussion (or at least have someone take you seriously when you talk about it, philosophically) I guess, the way it was marketed — the concept or the behaviour or whatever — was horridly misconstrued. The real essence of it was downplayed and twas grossly commercialised.
Sad, really. :(

I’m a person very fond of fashion.i think fashion is spreading all over the world but in particular among young teenagers(i’m one of them). They always want to cut the edge of fashion.I believe fashion matters, it helps define who we truly are.we buy clothes to please ourselves and not because we don’t care what we wear as lons asa we feel comfortable. and i agree with you yhat fashion makes you more confident in your own forces and gives you strenght to walk forward

Thanks for sharing with us your thoughts, Raluk! And you’re right in noting that fashion helps define who we are, well, at least, in terms of expressing our inner creativity and art through clothes and other fashion accessories, IMHO. :D

i don’t really get fashion…nor trends, why should you start doing something ’cause OTHER ppl do it?
it’s no expression of your individuality if you do something ’cause someone else does it… and to me that kinda is a definition off fashoin… don’t really understand it…
i don’t mean by this i ll go dress myself in a ieuw-way or so, but i dress myself on my way, not like someone else or so…
(i just came here by searching things i can use for a task for english exam(oral) where we ll have to discuss pro’s and cons of fashion( and trends)…if anyone was wondering…
