8 Fashion Bits for 2008

I’m looking forward to what the year has in store for all things fashion and style. I’ve been coming across trends here and there, some are transient and some can stand the test of time.

Rather than give you the run down on all these trends, I thought it’d be interesting to just list eight fashion bits I think we’d see a lot in the coming months, at least during the first half of the year.

1. Yellow

If there’s a colour that will burst forth in the coming months, it’s Yellow. It’s the happiest of them colour and certainly a bright addition to an outfit. You’ll spot it in bags, shoes, jewelry and, of course, garments.

2. Skirts

With the later part of last year being a season of the dresses, I’m sure that will still form a large part of fashion this year but there’s a great interest in skirts lately. From the early announcements of pencil skirts becoming all the rage, to shorter ones that have very unique details and design.

3. African or exotic prints

With more and more designers gaining inspirations from around the world, one of the main avenue to exercise this inspiration is the sort of prints used in the garments. Styling comes second. Of course, as previously reported, Global Mix is one of the up and coming trends, we’re already seeing a lot of African-inspired or exotic prints and styling milling about.

4. Wide-legged bottoms

And we’re not just talking about jeans or trousers, but also in cropped pants or gaucho-like bottoms. The wide-legged look will be in abundance.

5. Stocked heel, Platforms and Pumps

We’ve seen a lot of pumps all year round last year but twas overshadowed by flats and the peep-toe. We’re sure to see more of those two but we’ll be seeing more and more pumps of a different sort. More of the closed, platform and stocked heel kind. I think there’ll be a certain amount of platform-wedged kind, too. Use the photos as a guide of what sort of shoe I’m referring to. You’ll see a bit of oxfords, too.

6. Maxi Dresses

Even with the increasing popularity of skirts, we can still expect to see some dresses on the streets. It won’t be as short as we’d like but it’ll be as stylish. We’ll welcome more maxi dresses — them really long and billowy dresses — in our fashion future. It’ll be a real treat to wear it casually in the day or glamourously at night.

7. Colour Blocks

I already told you about them colour blocks and I’m simply including it on the list. It’s one of the “patterns” we’ll soon see more of. It can be small portions of the blocks to well-defined — covering a large area of the garment — blocks. We’ll see different colours, sometimes subdued sometimes contrasting but I’m sure all will be fun to look at.

8. Sequins

Ah, yes. Glam will never be too far from the pack. It’s our bit of retro I guess. It’ll be fun to see more skirts, tops, dresses sporting sequins on them.

My personal opinion on what we can keep an eye on this year. They’re based on observation and fashion reports but mostly what I’ve noticed the last few months plus a gut-feel. We’ll soon find out!
